Bit Rate and Baud Rate - Relation & Formula

What is Baud Rate?

Baud rate is a widely used term in data communication in the context of modems. Baud rate also called, Symbol rate and Modulation rate is generally the speed that data travels. More specifically, baud rate of a data communications system is the number of symbols per second transferred. A symbol may have more than two states, so it may represent more than one binary bit (a binary bit always represents exactly two states). It is a derived value based on the number of symbols transmitted per second.

“the signaling rate at which data is sent through a channel and is measured in electrical transitions per second”.

Is Bit rate = baud rate?

Baud rate refers to symbols per second or pulses per second or modulation rate: the number of distinct symbol changes per second. This is not equivalent to bit rate (digital signal)But in old modems and in analog transmission these would remain same as bit rate but not known.

Baud Rate Formula:

Baud rate equals the bit rate divided by the no. of bits represented by each signal shift.

How Bit rate and Baud Rate are related?

Bit rate equals the baud rate times the no. of bits represented by each signal unit. The baud rate equals the bit rate divided by the no. of bits represented by each signal shift. Bit rate is always greater than or equal to Baud rate
