Difference between VLAN and VPN

VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a set of hosts that communicate with each other as if they were connected to the same switch (as if they were in the same domain), even if they were not in the same physical location and not in the same location. connected to the same switch. VLANs allow networks to be grouped logically rather than on their physical location. VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides a secure method of connecting to a private network via an unsecured public network such as the Internet. Data sent over the unsecured public network is encrypted to maintain security. VPNs can be used to transfer any type of data, including voice and video.

What is a VLAN ??

VLAN stands for Virtual local area network, where computers, servers and other network devices(printers) are connected logically regardless of their physical location. In VLAN, if devices are scattered in different location/places VLAN logically group them in separate virtual networks.

Purpose of VLAN:

  1. Improved Security
  2. Traffic Management
  3. Make network simpler

Types of VLAN:

  • Static VLAN's
  • Dynamic VLAN's
Static VLAN: can be created by providing a name, a VLAN ID and by assigning a port to it.
Dynamic VLAN: are created by storing the hardware addresses of host devices in a database so that the switch can dynamically assign the VLAN at any time when joined.

What is a VPN ??

VPN stands for virtual private network which is made to give you the privacy online. VPN allows you to connect via unsecured network and gives your local network the ability to stay private and makes your location private. The data being sent and receive become encrypted and you are surfing anonymously and enhance the security of your network

How VPN Works?
When we open a website e.g. ProPatel.com , IP address and other essential information like Location, IP, Country and other things go to the server. Server replies back you with some of the information you required. These information is readable to the mischievous hackers and they can track you or use your data.

Only authorized users are allowed to access the VPN using remote desktop. A bio-metric authentication or password are mean to log on for authentication. Usually remote workers and abroad location offices uses VPN to share data and other network related activities. Using VPN would reduce an organization's network costs because it eliminates the need for leased lines to connect the organization's network to offices in remote locations.

How VPN Add Security?
When you send information online VPN creates a tunnel that encrypts your information. In case someone in between hold or grab your data they won't even read it. VPN tunnel makes it harder to hack in but somehow it is still possible to read that data after lot of work.

A VPN adds and extra server which means if you open propatel.com it will not directly hit to the web server first it goes to VPN server and then original server and replies you back. Which means another PC is added between you and the address you want to hit.
